Sunrise EquiTherapy | Instructor Testimonials - Sarah Hansen

Being involved with Sunrise Equitherapy has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.   My first volunteer experience involved taking Lucky, the miniature horse, into a Region V Day Care Center.  This is something that many people would never even think of doing.   Who knew that a horse dressed up with a witches headband and glittery scrunchies on his legs would bring so many smiles to people's faces?   Lucky is quite the gentleman allowing everyone, wheelchair bound and all, to approach and touch his soft mane and fur.  I have since been involved with Lucky at different venues in and around Lincoln from senior care centers to Day Care Centers like my first experience.  Lucky is definitely a "little" horse with a big heart.

Another reason why I enjoy volunteering for Sunrise Equitherapy is because for many riders, everyone reminds them of what they can't do - this program shows what they can do.  Riders feel what it like to walk without a wheelchair or walker. Riders gain confidence in themselves and learn to trust others.

Riders learn the complete picture of working with horses from start to finish.  More importantly when they achieve their goals, they learn to celebrate it.   It is amazing to see the transformation in many of these riders.  I may be an instructor but in many cases, I have been the one that has been taught some of life's most important lessons.

A big thanks goes to Julie for allowing a program like this to be available in the Lincoln area – it's a one of a kind.
