Sunrise EquiTherapy | News | Park Update

GREETINGS TO ALL!

HOPE YOU ALL HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS ENJOYING FAMILY AND FRIENDS!
HAPPY NEW YEAR, TOO!

HERE IS AN UPDATE ON THE LATEST NEWS FROM SUNRISE EQUITHERAPY

An equestrian design firm of Ewing Cole from Philadelphia was chosen to design the NE Horse Park, of which Sunrise will be part of with the UNL equine program, the mile race track and the Lancaster Event Center.

The Horse Park will be located on UNL property (220 acres) just north of 84th & Havelock.

Julie and Board members Jerry Burkey and Gail Jensen met with the firm in December to inform them of our needs in the new facility as a therapeutic riding center according to the standards set by North American Riding for the Handicapped Assoc. and from our experiences over the last 11 years.

Concept drawings have been submitted and I will share those with you later.

More meetings have been scheduled for this month with the city planners and engineers as the land is located in a flood plain which needs to be redefined etc.

We will meet with Ewing Cole again later this month to discuss their proposals/designs.

$$$$$Funding has not been discussed yet! Some dollars have been donated to the project by the 2015 Vision Group. Sunrise has a capital campaign fund started thanks to Board member Elli Rogan's donation. If you know any group/individual that would consider a gift, contact Sally Moon or Julie Wood.

Committees established for the Horse Park are as follows:

  • Steering Co: 2015 Vision Group, Horse Community (Cori Sampson Vokoun), HBPA (racing), LEC, UNL, NU Foundation

  • Stakeholder Invitees: UNL Animal Science, UNL Equestrian Team/Rodeo, 4-H Extension, HBPA, and Sunrise

  • Consultants: Clark Enersen, Olsson Assoc. and Ewing Cole

I will keep you informed as to the results of future meetings.

UNL Update:

Sunrise was invited by the Assistant Dean of Animal Sciences to make a presentation to the Equine Excellence Review Co in Nov. The committee was made up of individuals from equine programs at colleges and universities throughout the US.

The study was done to determine how the equine program at UNL can be improved to attract more students and keep others from transferring. Sunrise definitely has shown that EAA has an impact on the number of students interested in other aspects of horse professions.

Results of the study will be made available later this month.

UNL Update #2:

Julie will be teaching the class, Intro to Equine Assisted Activities again spring semester, 2010.

An increase from 8 students last year to over double this semester has demonstrated the interest in EAA.

Alex MacKay, Sunrise volunteer for 3 years and student in last years EAA class will be the Grad. Assistant for the class. In addition, Sunrise volunteers will be helping with the "hands on" portion of the class.

MORE NEWS!!

Julie, Alex and Gail Jensen visited the therapeutic riding facility at Texas Tech University where the riding program is run in conjunction with their animal sciences equine program.

Thanks to the Great Plains Communications corporate plane we were able to make a quick trip to learn how the partnership between TTU and the TTU therapeutic riding program is implemented.

Information from the trip was shared with the Equine Excellence Review Co and the Assistant Dean, Dr. Larry Berger.
