| The “Giant Strides Capital Campaign has become part of the Nebraska Horse Park project. See the link below for the press release, the concept drawing and proposed Sunrise facility floor plan. Sunrise and the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources Animal Sciences is partnering to build an innovative equestrian complex located on UNL property north of the Lancaster Event Center, 84th and Havelock. |
This partnership allows Sunrise EquiTherapy to:
- expand the program to year 'round lessons
- increase the number of individuals served
- develop additional equine therapy programs
- become a Premier Accredited Center through NARHA
- certify instructors
- hold special events
|
This partnership allows UNL Animal Science students various opportunities in the areas of:
- barn managers
- therapy horse trainers
- horse conditioning
- NARHA certified instructors
- volunteer coordinator/volunteers
- office staff
- marketing
- internships

We will share common areas of the complex such as classrooms, meeting rooms and offices with the UNL Animal Sciences equine program, but still have a closed stalling barn and our own indoor arena. Maintenance, equipment and grounds upkeep will be shared, thus eliminating duplications and unnecessary expense. Architects and engineers have been working on the plan and design. Meetings and field trips regarding barn designs for UNL and Sunrise are taking place.

Texas Tech University and North Dakota State University have therapeutic riding facilities in conjunction with their university equine program. Sunrise visited NDSU to see how their partnership is put together. A trip to TTU will take place in the fall of 2009 with Dr. Scheideler, Interim Dean of Animal Sciences and host for Sunrise EquiTherapy lessons in 2009, Julie Wood, Executive Director of Sunrise EquiTherapy, Dean Steve Waller, Dean of Animal Sciences and Board Member Gail Jensen of Great Plains Communications in Blair, NE. Gail will be providing the Great Plains corporate jet for the trip.
|
The partnership with UNL and Sunrise has grown even deeper by offering the class Introduction to Equine Assisted Activities. This class is open to all UNL students not just to Animal Sciences students. Julie Wood, Executive Director of Sunrise EquiTherapy and retired Special Education teacher is teaching the class. The class curriculum has been written by Julie and contains many "hands on"experiences, guest speakers and demonstrations by Sunrise clients. NDSU and TTU professors were consulted in conjunction with the planning. Plans are being made to continue the class next year and eventually expand it to include instructor certification.
|
This partnership between UNL, Sunrise EquiTherapy, Lancaster Event Center, University Foundation, and the Horseman's Benevolent & Protective Association has great potential and benefits all involved. The goal is to break ground in fall of 2009. For Sunrise and UNL it will be a dream come true.

Galloping Gail Trail will be the name of the Sunrise Sensory Trail in honor of Board Member and long time supporter of Sunrise, Gail Jensen. The trail will allow Sunrise clients to experience the beauty of nature while exercising all their senses astride a therapy horse. |
