I can't drive a car, but I CAN ride a horse!
I can drive a Jaguar. No, really I can! OK, so I don’t have my driver’s license yet, and I have a Mercury Sable, but I promise, “driving” a Jaguar is easy! Instead of four wheels, he has four legs, and instead of a sleek silver color, he is a milk chocolate brown. I say “he” because my “car” is a horse, named Jag, short for Jaguar.
My name is Katherine, and I met Jag through Sunrise EquiTherapy directed by Julie Wood. I’am sixteen years old, but because of medical problems in the past four years I have been denied the one thing that any 16 year old wants…FREEDOM! Jag also has medical problems that have kept him from being a show horse, although, he was one, once. He has been denied what any horse wants…to run…FAST! So when I met Jag three years ago, I felt that I had found a soul mate.

Katherine & Jag |
After a year of illness, I was ready to get involved with something I loved, horses. Jag was ready to ride also. I was a little nervous when I began, but I soon got the hang of riding Jag. The only horse I had ridden before was at a horseback riding place and the horses were used to just plodding along on the trail. I was amazed by Jag. I actually had to “steer” him! I could go backwards, forwards and sideways! Sometimes, I was even able to trot. After trying numerous physical therapy treatments, I had finally found one that was fun, but was still working my muscles.
I haven’t ridden for a while now for medical reasons, but one of my doctors has said that I can start riding in three weeks. Jag has helped me to be more confident about myself, knowing that I can still do things that I love even though my life has changed drastically. Even when I can’t ride, I still go out to see Jag-the one person (kinda) in my life that has made physical therapy entertaining. I can’t wait to ride again!
Katherine Wild was diagnosed with Wegener’s Granulomatosis and is in remission. She underwent a kidney transplant last year. She still can’t drive a car but she drives Jag! |
