Sunrise EquiTherapy | History & Accomplishments

Sunrise EquiTherapy was founded in 1998 and served three clients. In 1999, Sunrise became a member of PATH International and Julie Wood, Executive Director, received her instructor's certification from PATH International . Sunrise became a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation and established a Board of Directors, added more clients and more therapy horses.

We Have Grown!
Over the past 11 years, Sunrise has served over 400 individuals through:

  • Private and group lessons, over 5,000 lessons given
  • Day Camps with Alegent Rehabilitation Recreation and Cedar's Youth Services
  • Visits by Lucky Boy, Delta Certified Miniature Horse, to Alegent Immanuel Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital (Omaha), Fontennel Nursing Home (Omaha), Garden Square Assisted Living (Crete), Malone Center, Lincoln Children's Museum, Madonna Nursing Home/Alzheimer's Unit and Inpatient Respiratory Care.
  • Sunrise EquiTherapy Annual Charity Horse Show, since 2004, which includes classes for those with special needs and classes for able bodied riders.

Sunrise has served clients ranging in ages from 18 months to 72 years. We have worked with clients requiring many volunteers to those who eventually ride independently.

 
Accomplishments:
  • Provided internship for students from University of Nebraska, Lincoln and Southeast Community College
  • Assisted with certifying instructors through the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship
  • Seniors from Lincoln Public Schools secure 20 hours of volunteer work for their Citizenship Issues class
  • Beneficiary of the Monty Roberts Horse Sense Tour
  • Secured curriculum such as books, videos, workbooks/worksheets to compliment the rider's experience
  • Riders come from not only Lincoln but from Raymond, Malcom, Crete, Seward, Wilbur and Omaha
  • Sunrise riders gave demonstrations at horse shows, fundraiser's and expositions
  • Featured in the Lincoln Journal and on the front page of the Omaha World Herald
  • Secured 13 acres of land through the donation of $100,000 by board member Gail Jensen of Blair, NE
  • Received a new two horse/slant load trailer with a tack room through an anonymous donor
  • Established a partnership with the University of NE-Lincoln Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association, University Foundation, 2015 Vision/Lincoln and the Lancaster Event Center to be a part of the NE Horse Park to be located at 84th and Havelock
  • Executive Director, Julie Wood hired by UNL to teach "Introduction to Equine Assisted Activities" on the East Campus through the Animal Science program
  • Great Plains Communications of Blair, NE produced an informational DVD about Sunrise and our mission
  • Started lessons in Blair, NE at the farm of Jensen Arabians
  • Annual Charity Horse Show has grown from 15 entries and 8 horses to 50 horses and over 80 entries
  • Secured a portable wheel chair ramp through a donation from family and friends of Sunrise rider and volunteer, Kevin Cornell

  • Lucky Boy was featured on the MSNBC Web Page as well as in the Omaha World Herald, Fox 42, KETV Channel 7.
